how about a practise driving net.
It is something that he can put up in the back yard.
That way, he won't have to disappear down the golf course for as many hours … he'll be around the house more

Yes depends on the budget you have in mind.
My wife recently bought me a beautiful exotic wood golf putter from this website: http://www.exoticgolfputters.com/230.html
But be warned putters are personal so you may want to check with him first.
They are beautiful though and extremely well made. I am a single figure golfer and a reasonably good putter so I can vouch for the quality and workmanship.
